What is it: Fan Letters are a series of autonomous installations that represent letter forms with sound using copper wire, light emitting diodes (led), motors, clips, and containers. Two microphones have been strategically placed on two walls nearing a corner to capture the wind generated by an oscillating fan swinging from left to right. The microphones are set up in such a way that the sound generated from the fan blowing on them generates enough current to light up a series of LED's and to run the vibrating motors afixed to the copper wire. When the oscillating fan blows the microphone on the left wall, the letter form lights up and the motor vibrates generating a rattling sound in its container. When the fan blows the microphone on the right wall, the left wall is dark and quiet, and the word on the right wall corresponding to the letter lights up and vibrates. The viewer can also affect the light and motor output by making noise in the room, or by speaking directly into the microphones. The microphones respond to other sounds generated in the room such as talking, stomping, clapping, etc. The oscillating fans serve to demonstrate and instigate interaction.
